Cost per click is the price of a single visit — and it's downstream of two things you can influence: how cheaply you win impressions, and how often people click them. Here are the ranges, and the lever that moves both.
CPC = spend ÷ clicks. $100 for 200 clicks is a $0.50 CPC. The more useful identity is CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR): at a fixed CPM, doubling your CTR halves your CPC. Cheaper clicks are usually a creative win, not a bidding one.
Broad prospecting ballparks. Niche, geography, and season move these a lot.
| Platform | Typical CPC |
|---|---|
| $0.40–$1.60 | |
| $0.50–$1.80 | |
| TikTok | $0.50–$1.50 |
| Google Search | $1.00–$3.00+ |
| Google Display | $0.40–$0.80 |
| $3.00–$8.00 |
CPC is a means, not an end. Chasing the cheapest click often attracts low-intent traffic that wrecks your CPA and ROAS. A slightly pricier click from a well-qualified viewer is worth more than a bargain click that bounces — the high-CTR, low-conversion trap in miniature.
Since CPC drops as CTR rises, the pre-spend move is to launch the creative most likely to earn the click. Predicting hook strength from the ad itself lets you choose that version before you pay to find out. See ad pre-testing.

Score Your AdOn paid social, a cost per click under roughly $1 is generally healthy; Google Search runs higher at $1–$3+ and LinkedIn higher still at $3–$8 because the audience is pricier. But a 'good' CPC is only good if those clicks convert — a cheap click that never buys is not a win.
CPC = total spend ÷ clicks. Spend $100 and get 200 clicks and your CPC is $0.50. CPC is also CPM ÷ (10 × CTR), which is why a higher click-through rate directly lowers your cost per click at the same CPM.
Because CPC falls as CTR rises at a fixed CPM, the fastest lever is creative that earns more clicks — mainly a stronger hook. Better relevance also wins cheaper impressions in the auction, lowering CPM and CPC together. Testing the hook before launch is the cleanest way to push CPC down.
