Guide
Thumb stop ratio is the percentage of people who quit scrolling and actually watched your ad — 3-second views divided by impressions. It's the feed's first verdict on your creative, delivered in under a second of thumb travel.
Thumb stop ratio = 3-second video views ÷ impressions × 100. Serve an ad to 10,000 people, get 2,500 three-second views, and your thumbstop rate is 25%. The term comes from the physical behavior it measures: a feed moves because a thumb moves, so an ad only gets watched when the thumb stops. It isn't a metric platforms report under that name — you build it from 3-second views and impressions, both of which TikTok and Facebook expose in their ads managers.
Same math, different emphasis. Most media buyers use the two interchangeably, and arguing the distinction is mostly a way to lose friends in a Slack channel. If you want a working separation: thumbstop describes the viewer's behavior (the scroll stopped), while hook rate credits the creative element that caused it (the hook). What matters is that you track one of them consistently, because it's the first gate every ad passes or fails. We cover the metric's benchmarks and mechanics in depth in what is hook rate.
Commonly cited rules of thumb: under 20% means the feed is treating your ad as wallpaper, 20–30% is workable, and 40%+ is strong creative. Treat published benchmarks loosely — placement, audience temperature, and format all move the baseline. The comparison that actually pays is internal: the same offer with two different openings can produce thumbstop rates 2x apart. That gap is the cheapest performance lever you have, because it costs an edit, not a budget increase.
Thumbstop rate is normally a post-mortem — you pay for the impressions, then learn the opening failed. The pre-spend version is predicted Hook Strength: PreTestAds analyzes your creative's first 3 seconds and predicts how well it holds attention, scored against a benchmark of 76 top-performing ads from the TikTok Creative Center. Upload two or three openings, keep the one that scores strongest, and let the platform's real thumbstop rate confirm it. The craft side — what actually makes an opening stop thumbs — is covered in how to write a TikTok hook, and the broader workflow in ad pre-testing.
